Olympique Marseille are between the most successful clubs in France. The club has won 8 titles in Ligue 1, ten Coupe de France and three Coupe de la Ligue. In 1993, Marseille became the first and only French club to win UEFA Champions League, defeating Milan 1:0 in the final. However, the last period wasn't so good. PSG became the key name in France, while Marseille sank to their lowest position in Ligue 1 since the turn of the millennium just two seasons ago as they finished 13th in the table. Nevertheless, this season could be very successful if they lift the trophy in Europe League. Marseille started from the qualification where they managed to eliminate Belgian side Oostende and Slovenian outfit Domzale. Three victories, one draw and two defeats was the Marseille's score in the group stage of this competition. Konyaspor, Vitoria Guimaraes and Salzburg were the opponents. In the knock-out stage Marseille had eliminated Braga (3:1 aggregate victory), Athletic Bilbao (5:2 aggregate victory), RB Leipzig (5:3 aggregate victory) before met once again the Austrian side Salzburg in the semi-finals. Olympique won 2:0 at Stade Velodrome, but lost with the same result in Salzburg. Rolando became the hero on that match after scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute and brought his team in the final. Dmitri Payet should be mentioned as key player in the squad. The former West Ham star has hand in 10 goals (three scored, seven assisted) in Europe League this season. Coach Rudi Garcia has most of his players available, only Rolando and Kostas Mitroglou are rated as doubtful.
Atletico Madrid played a good season in domestic La Liga. They will probably finish as second, just behind Barcelona. However, the European campaign wasn't at desired level. Diego Simeone's men started in the Champions League group stage. They were together with Roma, Chelsea and Qarabag and finished as third, so continued in UEFA Europe League knock-out stage. The Spanish outfit first played against FC Kopenhagen. Atletico won both fixtures, 4:1 in Denmark and 1:0 at Wanda Metropolitano. In the next round Atletico have eliminated Lokomotiv Moscow with 8:1 aggregate victory. Then, in the quarterfinals they met Sporting Lisbon. Los Colchoneros won 2:0 at home, but found themselves a goal down in Lisbon for the second leg. That was their first defeat in this competition, though they reached the semi-finals where faced Arsenal. Atletico managed to stay unbeaten at the Emirats Stadium despite the fact Vrsaljko was sent off after just 10 minutes. Even worse, manager Diego Simeone was also sent to the stands shortly afterwards. The situation looked very complicate after Alexandre Lacazette scored in the 61st minute, but 10-men Atletico equalized through Antoine Griezmann. The Spanish outfit managed to win the reverse fixture in Madrid with 1:0 thanks to Diego Costa's goal in the finish of the first half and secured the final. Coach Simeone has two injury worries as Jose Gimenez and Vitolo are rated as doubtful. At the end I will mention that Simeone, who was sent off during Europa League semi-final at Arsenal, will serve the second of his four-match suspension.
Marseille vs Atletico Madrid Prediction:
Marseille are out of form at the moment, they have won just one of their last four matches in all competitions. I expect Atletico Madrid to win this match. According to me, the quality is on their side. Los Colchoneros have crucial experience in Europe. They have won the Europa League twice already, in 2010 and 2012. Finally, they have a player able to make the difference in final - Antoine Griezmann.
