Liverpool vs Southampton Preview:
Probable starting lineups:
Mignolet; Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Moreno; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wijnaldum, Emre Can; Mane, Firmino, Salah
Forster; Soares, Yoshida, Van Dijk, Bertrand; Romeu, Davis; Tadic, Boufal, Redmond; Gabbiadini
Liverpool started the new season very inconsistently. At the moment they are sharing the fifth position with Arsenal as both teams have 19 points. The Reds are huge twelve points behind the leaders Manchester City and most probably this will be another season without the trophy. The actual form is good, Liverpool have two wins on the last two matches in the Premier League. They managed to beat Huddersfield and West Ham. The Merseysiders also had a successful European campaign with two straight victories against the Slovenian side NK Maribor in the Champions League. Mohamed Salah play in good form and he has scored 12 goals across all competitions. Manager Jurgen Klopp, who has his own health issues, is still missing the injured Nathaniel Clyne, but Adam Lallana is close to return and might start this game from the bench. Philippe Coutinho is in contention despite missing Liverpool's last three games. Captain Jordan Henderson didn't feature for England during the international break and he is rated as doubtful with a thigh injury. Finally, Sadio Mane is also an injury doubt after he returned from international duty having suffered a slight recurrence of an old hamstring injury.
Southampton are on the 13th place with 13 points. The Saints suffered a painful 1:0 home defeat to Burnley last time out and now have just two victories in their last 10 matches. Manager Mauricio Pellegrino probably feels some pressure as the fans were expecting better results. The main problem he has is the attack - Southampton have scored just nine goals after eleven rounds. Striker Manolo Gabbiadini is the team leading scorer so far this season with three goals, but he failed to score on the last three matches. Pellegrino has no fresh worries, but Mario Lemina and Jeremy Pied are still struggling with injuries. Central defender Virgil van Dijk should start against the club that was linked during the summer transfer period. By the way, there will be some players that arrived to Anfield from Southampton, like Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren or Sadio Mane. The club from St Mary have earned £98m only from Liverpool in the Premier League era.
At the end I will mention that Liverpool failed to win any of the last three home fixtures against Southampton. At the same time the games have finished with Under 2.5 goals. Just look the results:
07.05.2017. Liverpool v Southampton 0:0 - Premier League
25.01.2017. Liverpool v Southampton 0:1 - EFL Cup
25.10.2015. Liverpool v Southampton 1:1 - Premier League
Liverpool vs Southampton Prediction:
I expect a low scoring match at Anfield. The key reason for my pick is connect with Southampton. The Saints will put the focus on the defense and Liverpool will have problem to score. Mane is not fully fit, while the Reds are struggling without him. Southampton have conceded only three goals on road this season. I expect Under 2.5 goals here.
Liverpool vs Southampton Pick: Under 2.5 goals
